Main Potato Disease and Pest Pressure
Late blight is the most destructive potato disease. It's caused by an oomycete that spreads fast in cool, wet weather. Lesions start on leaves and stems, then move to tubers if rain washes spores into the soil. Early blight is a fungal disease that starts on lower leaves and moves up. Both need a preventive fungicide for potato programs.
Bacterial diseases like black shank and soft rot also appear when soil stays wet or seed tubers are infected. Black shank causes black lesions on stems and wilting. Nematodes, aphids, and cutworms add stress. Weed pressure early in the season competes with young plants. A season program should combine fungicides, insecticides, and biostimulants.

Season Program Outline for Potato
- Seed and seedling stage
- Use a soil-applied herbicide before emergence where weeds are a problem. Treat seed tubers with a protectant fungicide if black shank or late blight is a known risk.
- Vegetative stage
- Start preventive late blight sprays when plants meet in the row. Rotate fungicide groups. Add a biostimulant to help roots recover from transplant or soil stress.
- Flowering and tuber set
- Keep late blight protection tight through flowering. Scout for aphids and apply an insecticide if thresholds are reached. A second biostimulant pass supports tuber fill.
- Tuber bulking to harvest
- Maintain late blight coverage until vine kill. If bacterial symptoms appear, use a copper-based product. Stop sprays according to the label of your registered product.
